“The Tatra Mountains are quickly becoming a super popular destination for climbing and must-see places amongst all mountaineers!!!“

The Tatra Mountains are the highest range in the Carpathian Mountains and Poland’s alpine-type mountains. They form a natural border between Poland and Slovakia. Gerlach (2655 m, Slovakia) and Rysy (2499 m, Poland) are the highest summits. Thanks to the relatively small area of the Tatras compared to the Alps, there’s a cosy atmosphere, but you can also feel like you’re in really high mountains. The landscape of the High Tatras is very interesting and is dominated by alpine-type ridges, towering walls and rocky peaks, which is a testament to the strong action of glaciers. There are so many activities you can do in our Mountains – read more here.

Flights and transport

You are responsible for booking your own flight to the place where we run our course. Flights to Poland are at the average price of €200 return (check budget airlines Wizzair and Ryanair). Please book your flight to Kraków airport. Why not combine this course with a visit to this historic city? I strongly recommend staying in Kraków few days! From Kraków, you can take a regular bus to Zakopane (2h).

To maximize your time and have stress-free travel I strongly recommend coming one day before and flying back the day after the course.  Zakopane is a busy resort and traffic jams occur very often despite very good transport.

Our meeting

We will collect you from Zakopane on the first day at 10:30. After the course, you can easily take a minbus or order a taxi from the central car park Palenica Białczańska back to Zakopane.

Mountain hut

We have pre-booked a friendly mountain hut “Morskie Oko” for our course. You will pay directly for the hut after your stay in cash. The average price is €20 per night (bedding, towel and local green tax included). You can buy breakfast (€10), dinner (€20) and snacks at the hut. Boiled water is free. Since this is a bunk bed-style hut, you will share the room with others.

Experience of Instructors

The course is run by a very experienced English-speaking Guide and Instructor of Alpinism (read about us more). Instructor-to-student ratio: 1:6.

Experience needed

To be able to take part in this course you should have summer walking experience, outdoor climbing experience, ability to belay and tie knots would be desirable. A good fitness level is required.

Important information about the course:

Tatra Climbing School is not a Tour Operator Company. We do not sell package holidays. We can only recommend a good hotel/hut and help with transport. You will be responsible for paying for those services directly to the providers. If you wish you can book alternative accommodation or transport to that recommended.

The price at the time of booking covers the cost of organisation and delivery of the proposed course and activity. Transport, accommodation and meals are not included in the price.

Several factors outside of our control will determine and dictate what can be reasonably accomplished during courses/activities. The most influential factors will be the weather and the physical and mental fitness of participants. The Lead Instructor may change or cancel a course/activity, at any time, if he believes that to continue as intended would place himself or any member of the party at risk.

What Our Customers Say

We work really hard to make sure customers on our winter mountaineering courses have the best, safest, and most fun time ever. Hopefully, this and the testimonials below will give you the confidence to book one of my fantastic courses! Check this feedback! 👇🏼

“Overall I was very impressed with the course including the organization, accommodation, food, equipment and especially the instructor. I would definitely sign up for another course run by Tatra Climbing School again in the future. I was not expecting such a high standard of food and lodging. The quality of the equipment provided was very high and given that we had avalanche detectors and were trained to use them clearly safety is taken very seriously and this is good to see. Thank you”

“After researching several winter mountaineering courses, Tatra Climbing School came top of my list due to the depth and content of their program. From my initial enquiry, all communication was prompt, professional and helpful. The Tatras are an amazing location; the course itself is a game-changer. If you want to move beyond walking in the hills to the realm of mountaineering, this course is for you. Marcin and his staff explain and demonstrate key concepts and skills in a clear, concise and practical manner. I’ll be returning for the advanced course in the future.”

”Tatra Climbing School is just a great way to go on an educating adventure! I did 4 days of mountaineering course in the Tatra mountains. The guides did a great job teaching and they are really friendly and fun people. I love when it feels like you become friends in a few days, and that’s how it felt on this course. The way everything was done was amazing, and as I am planning to become a climbing instructor myself one day, it was a great inspiration to see how a good course is put together. Thanks for a lifetime experience! Hope to book another course one day.”
